Great Escape: A Taste of the Litchfield Hills
This three-day festival offers food, wine, music, and even kids’ entertainment.
Each week, we’ll tell you about one great idea to give you a much-deserved break, and make your life a little easier, maybe a whole lot easier.
Most people look forward to Labor Day weekend for the chance to be outside, eating and relaxing, with the knowledge that the weather will soon be much cooler and summer will officially be over. There is something comforting about the tradition of cooking out on the grill and picnicking with family and friends, enjoying hot dogs, burgers, seafood, chicken, not to mention corn on the cob and all of the other great side dishes. Yum!
Nevertheless, true foodies might want to travel a little farther than their own backyard for a unique Labor Day weekend experience. Only about an hour away at Ski Sundown in New Hartford is the annual A Taste of the Litchfield Hills Festival, whose organizers invite you to “sample fine fare in the summer air.” This year marks the 26th anniversary of the festival.
There will be a huge variety of gourmet food offerings, including food trucks (new this year), items from local farmers’ markets, and wine samples from area wineries. There also will be live entertainment and shopping at an outdoor bazaar. The festival features activities for the whole family, including the ”Kidz on the Go” activity center, where parents can drop the kids off to play and then “escape” to enjoy the rest of the festival.
You’ll find plenty of seating in the ski lodge or outside under the tent. You can also bring your own lawn chairs and picnic blankets.
And if you still think that no Labor Day is complete without a hot dog, head over to Mustard’s Last Stand, one of the many food vendors, where you’ll find several varieties on the menu.
