North Haven to Begin Roadway Surface Treatment Program in Mid-September

Thinking some roads around town could use some TLC? Crack sealing will begin in a few weeks.

First Selectman Michael J. Freda announced on Aug. 23 that A and A Asphalt, LLC of Coventry, Connecticut has been hired through the State of Connecticut’s Capitol Region Council of Governments (CRCOG) by the Town of North Haven.  A and A Asphalt, LLC will commence crack sealing operations on 38 Town of North Haven roadways starting in mid-September and continuing through October, weather-permitting. Crack sealing, also referred to as a roadway surface treatment application is scheduled to begin the week of September 9, 2013.

The total project cost is estimated at $90,000 and shall be funded through the State of Connecticut’s Town Aide Road (Tar) grant fund dedicated to municipal roadway improvements. The project will be administered by the Town of North Haven’s Departments of Public Works and Finance and Administration.

Town roadways to be crack sealed in September and October include streets that were previously inspected by the Town’s Pavement Condition Consultant (BETA Engineering) and those which were noted as needing “surface treatments” in order to extend their useful life. Sealing asphalt pavement cracks is a common road maintenance activity whereby specialized materials are injected into cracks to prevent the intrusion of water and incompressible materials and to reinforce adjacent pavement. This process, in turn, extends the life of the pavement overall for years to come.

“Crack sealing of Town roadways is critical for the preservation of our infrastructure and continues to be a strong focus of this administration," Freda stated. “The Town of North Haven has been actively identifying areas that are not yet in need of milling and paving but can still benefit from surface refurbishment, which will save the Town and its taxpayers a great deal of money moving forward."

“Similar to last year’s efforts, Public Works staff will closely oversee all A and A Asphalt work to remedy areas in Town, which require surface treatment repairs," Public Works Director Lynn Sadosky stated.
