2012 Stan Wheeler Memorial Jazz Concert featuring Yale Jazz Ensemble and Reunion Jazz Ensemble

Yale Law School and Yale University Bands will present the 2012 Stan Wheeler Memorial Jazz Concert on Sunday, April 15, 2012, at 2 p.m. in Levinson Auditorium, Yale Law School, 127 Wall Street, New Haven.

The concert will feature the Yale Jazz Ensemble, Thomas C. Duffy, Music Director, and the Reunion Jazz Ensemble. Admission is free and no tickets are required. Call (203) 432-4113 or visit www.yale.edu/yaleband for more information.

Reunion is a group of Yale Jazz Ensemble alumni who, along with late Yale Law School Professor and trumpeter Stanton Wheeler of Branford, were early members of the YJE in the 1970s. Professor Wheeler continued to play with the Yale Jazz Ensemble until his death in 2007, and this is the fifth annual concert dedicated to his memory. Reunion members include well-known jazz artists Tim Moran (alto sax), Bob Kolb (tenor sax and flute), Gary Bennett (bari sax), Steve Perrett (trumpet), Tony Lom-bardozzi (guitar), Jeff Fuller (bass), Paul Sullivan (piano) and Frank Bennett (drums).

The YJE portion of the program will feature Express Delivery by Yale School of Music composition student and Assistant to the YJE Director Garth Neustadter; Ravel’s String Quartet in F Major, arranged for jazz ensemble by Yale School of Music alumnus and YJE trumpeter Tom Bergeron; Tuk Tuk’n by YJE freshman and pianist Lamtharn (Hanoi) Hantrakul; Salsa En Mi Alma by Yale College and School of Mu-sic alumnus and bassist Jeff Fuller; and guest vocalists DJ Stanfill, Jean Laurenz and Sean Maher.

The Yale Jazz Ensemble (YJE) is a seventeen-piece big band that performs a wide variety of music, from Yale’s Benny Goodman archive to the newest and most progressive jazz compositions. The Ensemble has performed extensively in the United States and internationally at such noted venues as New York’s Village Vanguard and Iridium jazz clubs, and London’s Ronnie Scott’s. The YJE has performed with or opened for The Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra, the Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin Big Band, the World Saxophone Quartet, Jane Ira Bloom, Jimmy Owens, and Branford Marsalis.
