Employers: Please Think of SARAH, Inc. For Your Next Project

This 56-year old organization helps find real jobs for individuals with disabilities, creating a win-win for the employer and employee.

A group of workers from North Haven are busy today, as they have been last week, last month, and last year, working on a variety of projects for local companies.

They are part of SARAH, Inc., the shoreline-based organization that provides services and employment opportunities to children and adults with intellectual and other disabilities.

SARAH, Inc. helps employ more than 125 special needs individuals in work-crew programs at local companies, and more than 35 individuals, also with special needs, who work on their own in the community.  Three Guilford families founded the organization in 1957.

It's a rewarding job opportunity for these hard-working folks. Yes, their work capabilities may differ from others, but in many instances, they are the perfect fit for a unique job or project. And they like bringing home a paycheck just like everyone else.

As Jim Lamb, manager of business development for SARAH, Inc. explains, these workers do very well with structured, repetitive work.

“Our people enjoy work like that, where others may become quickly bored,” said Lamb.

Many SARAH, Inc. workers are employed in assembly work, packing, piecework, and as cashiers and clerks. They put labels on bottles; insert pieces into little bags; package materials; and clean facilities.

A North Haven crew recently completed a seven-month project at Holo-Krome in Wallingford. They sorted products by bar code, affixed labels, and packaged the products in larger boxes.

“They definitely met a business need,” said Lamb.

The workers arrived on time, dressed properly with safety glasses and steel-toed shoes, and performed the work in a satisfactory manner.

“They were part of the workforce,” said Lamb.

A long-time SARAH, Inc. employer is Honeywell of North Haven. They have employed work crews for more than 20 years who process and compact cardboard. A second work crew joined the Honeywell team about two weeks ago.

Lamb said that he and others in the SARAH, Inc. organization would work with any employer to find the right niche and workers for their project.

“It can be a one-time job, work as a subcontractor, or another scenario,” he said. “We’re flexible.”

In addition to Holo-Krome and Honeywell, crews from SARAH, Inc. work at Tower Labs in Clinton, Honora, Inc. and Shoreline Health & Fitness, both in Old Saybrook, as well as other local companies.  They also work in grocery stores such as Stop & Shop, Wal*Mart, and Big Y, for example.
