Letter from First Selectman Michael J. Freda

Freda's Focus, 10/14/2010

The Town of North Haven is preparing for a busy weekend of events. Saturday, October 23rd is a big day for the Town of North Haven. I am pleased to share with you that the Show & Sell Business and Community Expo has returned and is being held at the North Haven High School on 221 Elm Street from 10 am to 3 pm. Many local businesses and community groups are participating, with a "Taste of North Haven" food court, a variety of local entertainment, performances, demonstrations, raffles, samples, "touch-a-truck" and more, the event promises to be fun for all.

The event is funded completely by business sponsors and I would like to thank the following businesses for sponsoring this year's event. Our Premium Sponsors ($1,000) are: The United Illuminating Company and GBAC – Group Benefit Administrators of CT, Inc. Our Event Sponsors ($400) are: Ciulla & Donofrio LLP, Country Septic Service LLC, Extreme Bathovers, Forget Me Not Flower Shop LLC, Godfrey-Hoffman Associates, Non-Tox Pest Management, Nova Dental, Parese Motors, Steamatic of CT LLC, and Tobin Center for Chiropractic. In addition, the Advisor is our Media Sponsor.

I hope you will join us and attend the Show & Sell to support our local businesses and community groups and take advantage of the opportunity to learn about their products and services.

Another event on Saturday, October 23rd will be our second Prescription Medication Disposal Event, sponsored by the North Haven Substance Abuse Prevention Council. Also being held at the High School, on the Elm Street side entrance from 10 am to 2 pm. This is the perfect opportunity for you to dispose of expired and unwanted medications around your home. Help protect your family, your community, and the environment by properly disposing of the medications you no longer need.

The NHSAPC is urging residents to plan on dropping their medication at the event. It only takes a few minutes, is confidential, and you can be sure that the drugs are properly disposed of. All medications will be properly disposed of by a licensed medical waste disposal company. This event is important to North Haven on several levels; Turning in your unused drugs ensures that they will not be used for recreational purposes and helps to keep our water clean.

The third event being held on Saturday, October 23rd is Go Pink For The Cure In North Haven. As you drive around town, you may notice the pink ribbons posted on many of the trees and poles. These ribbons are to remind us that that for women in the United States breast cancer is the second most common cause of cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death. The Connecticut Women Finding A Cure will be sponsoring a motorcycle run through North Haven culminating at the North Haven High School parking lot where a proclamation will be presented to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness.

I would be remiss if I did not mention the 3rd Annual Peter's Rock Fall Festival on Sunday, October 24th from 11 am to 3 pm, 133 Middletown Avenue. This is a wonderful event to enjoy on a fall day. There will be free food and guided hikes, along with pumpkin decorating and activities for children.

It gives me great pleasure to see our community coming together to host these various events and I encourage you to partake in the activities. I hope to see you there.

Sincerely,

Michael J. Freda
