North Haven Unemployment Flat, Below State Average

The economy holds steady in the latest Connecticut figures.

North Haven’s unemployment rate remained flat in March at 7.3 percent flat in the latest figures from the Connecticut Department of Labor. Connecticut’s unemployment figures dropped a mere tenth of a percent from February.

The figures show that 958 people are unemployed, compared to 969 in February.

Statewide, the unemployment rate is 7.7 percent, down 1.4 percent from the same time last year. That’s below the national average of 8.2 percent.

“The warm winter allowed many weather sensitive job sectors to remain active longer and show stronger growth than is typical. As a result, the normal seasonal upswings we see in the spring appear smaller than usual. Once seasonally adjusted, some of these sectors, including construction and trade, are showing declines," said Andy Condon, director of the office of research, in a statement.

If you are one of those without a job, statistics mean nothing. There's many factors that determine unemployment and often they are overlooked. How many unemployment benefits ran out and some stopped looking? How many are listed as unemployed? How many are being taxed as employed? The way records are kept are not truly accurate, because not all data is considered. The numbers are often misleading as unemployment could actually be higher than some say it is.
