Young Chiropractors Set Up Shop on Washington Avenue

Dr. Candice Pollack and Dr. Maxwell Mitchell bring wellness center to North Haven.

Fixing up blighted properties may be a hot topic on northern Washington Avenue, but it's not the only kind of renewal that matters for two young doctors, whose Advanced Physical Medicine (APM) Chiropractic and Wellness Center opened earlier this year at the intersection of Route 5 and Glenn Road.

"We're not just back doctors," explained Dr. Candice Pollack at the office she shares with Dr. Maxwell Mitchell. "We want to create a one-stop healthcare facility for all kinds of injuries and ailments."

Mitchell notes that the practice's speciality lies in the treatment of athletic injuries that principal care doctors may be unable to diagnose or attenuate effectively.

"Our focus is to help people who lead active lifestyles," he explains.

Following their graduation from the University of Bridgeport's College of Chiropractic, Mitchell and Pollack, like many people entering the post-recession workforce, found a weak labor market with few available jobs.

In response, the two decided to open their own practice, creating a business plan and searching for office space.

Both chiropractors wanted to work locally—Pollack is originally from Hamden, Mitchell from Waterbury. Regarding the vacancy at 444B Washington Avenue, Mitchell says the pair "lucked out." They first looked at the property in August of last year, and took over the lease in February.

Since opening in April, APM has been reaching out the community in a variety of ways. The doctors made an appearance at North Haven's Show and Sell, and have established relationships with the Vitamin Shop and several local gyms.

Currently, Pollack and Mitchell are in the process of talking to Town Hall about beginning a wellness initiative, as well as seeking a site in North Haven to hold monthly lectures on nutrition and health.

While growing awareness around town, APM is also looking to expand their offices to include other specialists, such as a nutritionist or a physical therapist.

"There are a lot of myths out there about chiropractic," says Pollack. "A lot of our patients come in skeptical and leave astonished how well the treatment works."
