North Haven Rotary Club Honors High School Unsung Hero

A high school student was nominated by the principal and honored by the Rotary Club as the Unsung Hero for the fall semester.

In order to graduate from North Haven High School a student must accumulate 40 hours of community service over the four years. Sabrina Marie Pond has already collected over 142 hours by the second quarter of her junior year. Describing the student as an “exemplary community member,” the school’s principal nominated her for the honor, partially because he serves with the well spoken Unsung Hero on the town’s Substance Abuse Prevention Council. In his recommendation, Dr. Russell Dallai wrote, “Sabrina brings to her service a strong work ethic and a powerful insight into the community's needs. She has a terrific personality and a deep belief in her work, which helps to explain her ability to enlist peers and adults in her efforts.”

The youth is a volunteer at Peter’s Rock and also founded Project Green which focuses on litter clean up in North Haven. In her prepared remarks to the Rotary club, Sabrina said that she was “extremely grateful for the award which was totally unexpected” and thanked the group for the honor stating that she gets a “great sense of satisfaction” in helping others at various events. The principal further stated, “She has accomplished an impressive amount of good already, and she is only a first semester junior. The high school community is proud of Sabrina, and looks forward to her continued growth and contributions.” Other credentials listed for her award: Social Action Committee at St. Barnabus Church; Volunteer at Rotary events; Go Green at Department of Public Works; Memorial Garden planting at Police Station; Volunteer with children at Ridge Road School.
