Aftershocks from Washington DC Earthquake Rattle CT

Did you feel an aftershock in North Haven?

Aftershocks from this afternoon's 5-8 magnitude quake in Virginia have been reported in southern CT, with a brief rumble shaking buildings in New Haven a little after 2:00 p.m.

The United States Geological Survey reports that the quake struck at 1:51 p.m. about 34 miles north of Richmond, Va., and was felt as far north as Boston.

The quake is also causing quite a stir on social media networks. Both Facebook and Twitter are abuzz with quake-related chatter. A sampling:

  • Fox CT’s Twitter account reported that the New Haven Open tennis tournament was evacuated.
  • The New Haven Register staff felt it at their office.
  • It was felt at the learning center of Masjid al Islam on Gilbert Avenue in New Haven.
  • The Connecticut Post staff in Bridgeport felt it.
  • Officials are checking the structural integrity of a building in Shelton, CT Post reports.

“The movement people in Connecticut felt was associated with the earthquake which originated in Virginia," said Governor Malloy in a statement. "Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection staff is at the Emergency Operations Center as a precaution, but at this point, there have been no reports of injury or damage.”

Lieutenant J. Paul Vance of the CT State Police reported that his office has been flooded with 911 calls, although no damage has yet been documented in the state.

Aftershocks have been reported in Philadelphia and New York, where cell phone service interruptions and evacuations have taken place.
