Beware Potential Storm-Related Scams

The Agency on Aging Warns Consumers of Potential for Con Artists

The Agency on Aging of South Central Connecticut is reminding residents to beware of potential Hurricane Irene related scams. With so many fallen trees and large amounts of brush in need of removal, "There may be 'contractors' who are soliciting pre-paid tree and brush removal business or those who are 'collecting donations for relief funds,'" said Leslie Pruitt of the agency. "As we know with any major event, it's bound to happen."

If a price sounds too good to be true, it is. To find a state-licensed arborist, check www.kellysolutions.com/ct/index.htm or www.ctpa.org. Also, contractors for home repairs must be licensed through the Department of Consumer Protection which can be contacted at 860-713-6110 or 800-842-2649, or at its Web site: www.ct.gov/dcp.”

And as always, if you think someone has approached you with a potential scam, report them to the police.
