The Big Y supermarket on Washington Avenue was evacuated late this afternoon due to structural concerns related to snow buildup on the store's roof.
The supermarket remains closed at the time of this writing, but crews are on scene to deal with the hazard. Cones are blocking entryway into the building's parking lot, and customers have left the premises.
The Building Department confirmed that the Building Official is on-site. A comment from the inspector is expected to be forthcoming.
Snow buildup on roofs has led to numerous structural failures throughout the state in the past week, including recent collapses in Bethany and Milford.
Stay tuned for more information on the situation as it develops.
