Child Abuse Prevention Week Under Consideration

Town may issue a proclamation in fight against child abuse.

The Town of North Haven may issue a proclamation condemning child abuse this fall, according to First Selectman Michael Freda.

Responding to a letter from resident Raymond Fowler calling on the town to institute an awareness program for child abuse, Second Selectman Tim Doheny and Third Selectman Steve Fontana collaborated on possible courses of action, meeting with officials from the school system, the police department, and community and health services.

Speaking at the June Board of Selectman meeting, Fontana noted, "It is imperitive that we are educated about child abuse."

The two officials laid out four measures the town could implement to address Fowler's concerns: first, a town-wide awareness week could be organized for September, followed by outreach efforts to PTSA groups, sports coaches, and civic organizations to help train members in identifying and reporting cases of abuse.

Additionally, Fontana and Doheny recommended a training session for town employees, Board of Education members, and other adults who work extensively with children.

Finally, the pair suggested offering information and networking options to foster families in the area.

Freda then asked that updates on preparations for an awareness week be presented at future Selectmens' meetings.

The First Selectman also commented that the town could issue a proclamation condemning child abuse. North Haven unveiled a similar proclamation pledging its support for breast cancer research during last year's Show and Sell event at the High School.
