North Haven HS Class President Barred from Giving Grad Speech

Molly Gambardella says she's being punished for her involvement with the Occupy New Haven protest.

administrators say it’s because she missed the deadline for submitting her speech, but 2012 Class President Molly Gambardella says the real reason she won’t be allowed to address her graduating class is because of .

According to a news report by WTNH Channel 8, Gambardella, who is a National Honor Society member, accused the school and some of her classmates of picking on her because of her political involvement.

School Supt. Dr. Robert Cronin denied that in an interview by a television station reporter. He said Gambardella missed the May 25 deadline for submitting her speech.

Being elected class president is both an honor and a privilege. With this position of leadership comes great responsibility. It is unfortunate that MS Gambardella decided to pursue her own personal agenda rather than fulfill her obligations that her peers not only elected her to do, but also expected her to do. Perhaps Ms Gambardella should resign her position since she knowingly failed at executing her duties. I support and applaud Dr. Cronin's decision to stand firm on the clearly stated policies. Let’s not have one lone, irresponsible teen disrupt others well deserved shining moments with the negative attention seeking behavior that is displayed. The NHHS class of 2012 is a group of amazing seniors. They have followed the rules and worked incredibly hard to receive their diplomas. The class of 2012 will be remembered for all they have achieved and also for the positive influence they have brought to NHHS and this town.

And what exactly have students learned in their four years? Besides a biased history of America (unless you read Zinn's A People's History of the United States) they have been trained to follow the rules of a government that is fatally flawed at this moment. What is the educational message to have the school board read and edit your speech, as the Superintendent claims to be his "educational" right? There is so much work to be done to get this country back to one the founders would recognize.
