North Haven Unemployment Drops to 6.9 Percent

The town's joblessness rate moved to below 7 percent only two months after reaching a year-to-date high in July.

North Haven's latest unemployment rate dropped more than a full percentage point in September, continuing its improvement after reaching it's highest level of the year in July.

According to the latest figures released by the Connecticut Department of Labor, North Haven's unemployment rate for September was 6.9 percent.

In August, the town's unemployment rate sat at 8.7 percent.

Additionally, the department's figures showed the reported labor force in North Haven also lowered during the same period: from 13,315 in August to 13,098 in September.

n Connecticut, the pool of jobless people last month also dropped to 8.2 percent overall. Nationally, the United State's unemployment rate is 7.6 percent.

Locally, East Haven's unemployment rate is 9.3 percent, Branford's sits at 7.3 percent and North Branford is 6.8 percent. The New Haven County unemployment average for September was 8.6.

North Haven Numbers

North Haven's lowest unemployment rate of the year so far was 6.2 percent in April. It rose to 6.5 percent in May, was 7.0 percent in June — and the town began the year with an unemployment rate of 8.0 percent in January.

In 2011, North Haven's annual average unemployment rate was 8.0 percent. In 2010 it was 8.3 percent.

The town's highest reported unemployment rate over the last two years was in August 2010, when 9.2 percent of North Haven was out of work. It's lowest came in April of this year at 6.8 percent.
