[UPDATED] Fatal Accident On I-91 Kills North Haven Man

Update at 7:30 a.m. Monday

WTNH is reporting that a 24-year-old North Haven man is dead — and another 24-year-old local woman is on life support — following a one-car accident along Interstate 91 in North Haven late Sunday night.

The driver, David Cooley, was killed. And his passenger, Paige Camera, also from North Haven, was seriously injured, WTNH reports this morning.

According to North Haven Fire Lt Paul Januszewski, Sunday evening at about 10 p.m., the department responded to the report of a motor vehicle accident with injuries on I-91 South at the Exit 10 off ramp.

The following units were dispatched and responded to the scene: E-1, T-1, Emg-1, E-8 and Car 31.

Januszewski reports the firefighters arrived to find one car in the woods on the right side of the highway.

"The motor vehicle was found to have significant damage after striking a tree," Januszewski stated in a press release early Monday morning, adding that the car was occupied by two people — both of whom were trapped inside.

Firefighters then used various saws and hydraulic rescue equipment, including the “Jaws of Life," to gain access to the car and perform extrication.

Extrication was performed on both occupants while advanced medical care was also being administered by fire department personnel, Januszewski said.

Both patients were transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Connecticut State Police remained on the scene conducting an investigation as of early Monday morning, Januszewski said.

This was the third fatal accident over this past holiday weekend, according to the WTNH report.

Scanner reports are indicating that Interstate 91 south has been shut down around 10:40 p.m. at exit 10 due to a motor vehicle accident that occured at exit 9. 

There are reports of two possible fatalities. Nothing has been confirmed at this time.
