Update: State Warns Snow Could Cause Deck Collapse

Following this morning's icy downpour, the National Weather Service is calling for between one and three inches of snow overnight with an additional ice accumulation approaching one-tenth of an inch. The chance of precipitation is 100 percent Tuesday. Rain may continue throughout the evening, and a slight chance of precipitation will continue into Wednesday.

The state Department of Public Safety is advising homeowners and businesses to check roof drains to make sure they are clear of snow or ice to minimize the risk of roof or deck damage or collapse.

“Liquid precipitation can add significantly to the weight of the existing snow that has already fallen,” DPS Commissioner James Thomas said in a press release. “The biggest problems are for homes and businesses with flat roofs and for structures like decks, where the rainfall we are expecting can add as much as 60 percent to the weight they are already carrying. Increased rainfall could add even more weight -- and boost the risk of failure correspondingly."

Thomas said residents with concerns should contact local building inspectors—or, in the case of an emergency, the local fire department.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal and the Office of the State Building Inspector will be available to assist local officials.
