Art for Mom: Annual Mother's Day Show at Luckey & Merrill Studio

Visit Luckey & Merrill Studio for its annual Mother’s Day Show—ART FOR MOM—with an Opening Reception on Friday, May 2, 6-9pm, and an Open House on Saturday, May 3, 10am-4pm. The show will feature whimsical wearables by textile artist Owen Sea Luckey, stunning contemporary jewelry by Kristin Merrill, and the creative interpretations of guest artist, painter and printmaker Richard Carleton. The event, held at Luckey & Merrill Studio, 181 Main Street in Branford, is free and open to the public.

Owen Sea Luckey is an artist, fabric designer, engineer and innovator. Her recent effort is a line of re-imagined, one-of-a-kind wearables called Luckey Re-Do. For this new collection, launched in 2012, she transforms recycled garments into wearable art using traditional craft techniques, sewing, embroidery, knitting and felting. Each garment enjoys Luckey’s imaginative eye and whimsical touches, like embellishments of fur, antique buttons and lace, appliqués, fun pockets and her signature handknit accents. In addition to Re-Do, Luckey continues to produce her signature line of hand knit scarves, gloves, hats and collars, all of which can be found at the Art for Mom event.

Like her studio partner, Kristin Merrill is equally multi-talented, continually experimenting and combining precious gems, pearls and metals with found objects to create stunning contemporary jewelry and sculptures. While traditionally taught at the School of American Crafts, Merrill enjoys breaking the rules of metal working, using unconventional methods to bring out their natural beauty—a wonderful synergy of traditional and creative, of left brain and right brain. Ultimately, though, her work speaks to metamorphosis, bringing together diverse materials to create something transformed and new.

Joining Luckey and Merrill this year is landscape painter and printmaker Richard Carleton. A favorite of Luckey & Merrill Studio, Richard is well-known for a number of prints he has done of the area, including local water views and Harkness Tower at Yale. He is represented in several galleries in New York and in Boston.
