Celebrate National Handwriting Day with Author Kitty Burns Florey

Author Kitty Burns Florey will celebrate National Handwriting Day on Thursday 1/23/14 by reading from her new novel, THE WRITING MASTER, at an event cosponsored by RJ Julia and the Madison Historical Society. The reading and discussion about life in Victorian New Haven will take place at 7pm in the Victorian Room at the Allis-Bushnell House, 853 Boston Post Road, Madison, CT.

THE WRITING MASTER is a novel
about an expert
penman during the golden age of elegant handwriting. It's set in the Victorian New Haven and Hampden of the 1850s. Michael Dirda at The Washington Post gave it a rave review, saying "Gradually it becomes clear that The Writing Master
isn't just a mystery or a romance, it's a study of family unhappiness,
mental illness and, above all, the condition of women in
mid-19th-century America. For all the lightness of tone, it is filled
with considerable darkness, and there is no assurance that all will end
happily. But the book is chockablock with fascinating characters,
especially the women....There are, naturally, surprises in store...as
the narrative loops and plot swirls of The Writing Master are finally knotted together."

The evening will also include a presentation by calligrapher Martha German about what handwriting looked like in Victorian times.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, please see: http://www.rjjulia.com/event/kitty-burns-florey-writing-master
