First Selectman Michael J. Freda honored Pat LaTerza, Library Head of Children’s Services, with an official citation of the Town of North Haven on June 5, 2014. The award was for her contributions to the community and the enrichment of North Haven's children through reading.
LaTerza, a Hamden resident, has worked at the library for close to thirty years and coordinates all of the children programs at the library. From crafts and cooking programs to reading and preschool programs, LaTerza creates fun activities that engage children and instill a love of reading families can share together.
A new initiative to encourage children and their parents to read together, One Book One Town, was recently launched to high praise. The goal is to get the parent to read to the child and the child to read to the parent. Local organizations and businesses in town are involved and the response has been positive.
LaTerza, along with her staff, has created programs for children of all ages such as Toddler Time, Tuesday Tales, Wacky Wednesdays, Krafty Kids and Friday Fun.
The Children's Department of the North Haven Library is located in the lower level at 17 Elm Street and contains over 40,000 items, including books, audio, and visual materials and more.
Seven computer stations are available for children and each has various educational games installed. A chess and checker table, a train table, Legos, pre-school puzzles, and a puppet theater welcome children and encourages young minds to think creatively.
