FREE PRIVATE WELL TESTING FOR ARSENIC AND URANIUM

Homeowners in Bethany, Hamden, North Haven and Woodbridge are invited to participate in a free study to identify arsenic and uranium in private wells. Quinnipiack Valley Health District (QVHD) is facilitating this statewide study in these towns. The purpose of the study is to determine the extent of the presence of arsenic and uranium in private wells. The Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH) has received funds from the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) for this study. Excessive levels of arsenic have been identified in a certain region in Connecticut. The CT DPH is seeking to identify other areas of the state that may also have elevated levels.  

Arsenic and uranium are metals that occur naturally in bedrock. When groundwater comes in contact with the bedrock, the metals may leach out and contaminate private wells. Both metals are considered toxic. The U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recently established drinking water standards for arsenic and uranium because of the impact they can have on human health. Testing the well water is the only way to determine how high the levels are.  

 There is no charge for homeowners to participate in this study. Private well owners will be informed of the results.  If the well tests positive, the homeowners will be given information and advice on the appropriate treatment and follow up. The samples from the well will be collected and transported to the state lab at no cost to you. This opportunity will be limited to 20 properties on a first-come, first-served basis.
