‘Collectors...Like to Gather Interesting Gravestones’

A look at the day's comments from Patch account holders in the region.

“Collectors do like to gather interesting gravestones, although this one, while interesting and poignant, isn't particularly out of the ordinary. It probably was stolen and the culprit abandoned it by the highway to avoid getting caught with it.” Three decades ago, the Milford Police Department came across an abandoned headstone from the 1800s. This week they found out it . How the gravestone ended up Milford is unknown, but has a theory.

“Hope this one stays long enough to get a handle on everything and clean up loose ends!” Oxford has gone through four superintendents in two years and is now looking for another. hopes the new person will stick around.

“Congratulations to all the graduates. All that hard work paid off!” It’s never too late to graduate high school, as from Naugatuck Adult Education. offers congrats.

Collectors do not take gravestones. The make photographs or careful rubbings of the markers. My family and I have traveled the world recording different stones and my uncle Daniel Farber and his wife Jessie Lie produced the Farber Gravestone Archives consisting of over 13,000 pre-colonial stones. This resource is now available for free on the internet for research. Theses stones are America's first Folk Art, and belongs in situ. I was very pleased to read that through careful research the little girl's marker has found it's proper and sacred place. Those were not collectors who stole it, they were thieves.
