Parent's Q&A: Talking to Kids About Substance Abuse

How do you discuss the topics of drugs and alcohol with kids and teens?

With the North Haven Substance Abuse Action Council sponsoring a prescription drug take-back event this Saturday, we want to reach out to parents for a discussion about drugs and alcohol.

Do you talk with your kids about the dangers of substance abuse? If so, how do you approach the topic? Is there a certain age where you feel having this talk with kids becomes increasingly necessary? What kinds of responses do you get from your children on the issue?

Furthermore, are some drugs less alarming to you than others (marijuana, for example, versus harder drugs), or is the use of all drugs unacceptable? What kind of peer pressure do you feel your kids face from friends or peers regarding these issues?
