From the Police Files: Shots of North Haven's Past

Forgotten, almost discarded photos have been rediscovered and rescued thanks to two police officers who saw more than snapshots.

A treasure-trove of black and white photos, historically important to the North Haven Police Department and the town of the North Haven were recently discovered. Thanks to the quick-thinking of Patrol Officer Ted Stockmon and Sergeant Kirchner, pictures that were found during construction and cleaning, have been saved from certain destruction. “These were forgotten fifty years ago,” said Stockmon, “and probably only still exist because they were stored in rooms that very few people had access to.”

Stockmon had the pictures developed, digitally enhanced and saved to disc. There are approximately 500 photos in all. A number of the photos are from the very beginnings of the North Haven Police Department in 1943. The dates of the photos span the early 40s to the 80s. Stockman explained, “Many show buildings that have been gone for decades. I believe them to be historically valuable to the town and police department.”

Here is a small sample of the cache of photos Officer Stockmon and Sergeant Kirchner found. Many of these photos have never been published before now.
