North Haven Police Charge 72-Year-Old With DUI After Critically Injuring Jogger

Theodore Spalding arrested, victim remains in critical condition.

Theodore Spalding, 72, of North Haven, is accused of driving while intoxicated when his blue Ford pickup truck struck and critically injured a 21-year-old jogger on Middletown Avenue Wednesday afternoon.

Spalding was arrested at the scene after initial investigation led officers to suspect Spalding was intoxicated.

Spalding was charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence and second-degree assault with a motor vehicle, and was held in lieu of $100,000 bail. He was expected to be arraigned at Meriden Superior Court today.

Police are not releasing the name of the victim until his entire family has been notified.

According to wtnh.com, two nurses and a doctor happened to be driving by when the accident occurred and helped the man who suffered two broken legs and severe trauma to his face.

North Haven Police Captain Mark Genovese told wtnh.com that "there's a good chance" that those two nurses and doctor just happening to be there saved the man's life.
