Police Urge Caution, Vigilance After Rash of Car Break-ins

According to police, there have been more than 30 complaints of stuff being stolen from unlocked vehicles in July and August.

The North Haven Police Department is urging residents to lock their cars after a string of vehicle break-ins over the past two months.

In July and August, the department has investigated more than 30 complaints of thieves targeting unsecured vehicles, stealing everything from electronics to cash. None of the vehicles has been damaged because they were left unsecured, with most of them being parked in the victim's driveway. The thefts typically occurred in the late evening to early morning hours.

The department offered the following tips to avoid being victimized:

  • Lock your vehicle
  • Roll up the windows
  • Don't leave any valuables inside your vehicle
  • Leave outdoor lights on
  • Report suspicious activity to police
