The Story Behind the School Lockdown

So, what exactly happened on Friday morning to cause the secure lockdown of the high school and middle school? The North Haven police explain:

On a beautiful, sunny Friday morning, parents heard through their kids that the high school (and subsequently the nearby middle school) were on lockdown at about 8:30am.

North Haven police, in a statement, explained that an alleged burglar, caught in the act by a homeowner, had fled the scene and was running around the Elm Street area.

According to police, at around 7:30am on May 17, an Elm Street resident was awakened by a noise coming from the rear door to his condominium.  The noise continued for several minutes prompting him to come down from his second floor bedroom and investigate.

As he opened the blinds, he found a man kneeling down prying off the door’s locking mechanism, said police.  The man who was prying off the lock stopped and ran north along Elm Street towards the North Haven High School and North Haven Middle School campus.

Police worked closely with school administrators securing the buildings to ensure the safety of the students while police searched the area.

A short time later, officers apprehended the suspect.

He is identified as Jason Edward Martin, 35 years old. Martin, a West Haven resident, is currently being held by the North Haven Police Department on a $100,000 bond and has been charged with criminal attempt to commit burglary in the second degree.

He will be arraigned in Meriden Superior Court at a future date.

The police did not release a photo of the suspect.
