DTC Caucus Draws Record Crowd

Chair will be named in March.

A large crowd descended on the recreation center Tuesday to appoint new members to the North Haven Democratic Town Committee.

"I have never seen this many people in this room," noted Walt Spader, last year's Democratic nominee for First Selectman who acted as Secretary for the event.

DTC members split off by ward into five groups to nominate both board members and district captains.

Newly elected members of the DTC will be seated in March.

Spader, describing the duties of nominated members, said: "There's no oath of loyalty to vote only for Democratic candidates, but there is an oath of participation and responsibility. Our duties as part of the Democratic Town Committee are to support party-endorsed candidates."

Spader added that the DTC would be fielding a candidate against State Representative Dave Yaccarino in the 2012 election, and would take an active role in other state and local races.

While the outcome of the nominating contest has yet to be officially announced by the DTC, the North Haven Way speculated that former First Selectwoman Janet McCarty might be seeking the position of party chair, a post currently expected to go to Walt Spader.

What do you think the most viable DTC ticket going forward would be? Do you think North Haven Democrats have a chance for a better showing in the 2012 races than they did in 2011 and 2010?
