Fasano Backs Legislation for Women's Health

New bill would require insurance companies to cover MRI's for women at risk for breast cancer.

A new bill backed by State Senator Len Fasano (R-North Haven) will require CT insurance companies to cover MRI's for women at increased risk of breast cancer, either due to family history or physical indicators.

The new law, SB10 An Act Concerning Insurance Coverage for Breast Magnetic Resonance Imaging, will expand on the state's existing mandate that insurance policies cover baseline mammograms for women age 35 to 39, and annual mammograms for women over the age of 40.

Speaking yesterday following the bill's passage in the legislature, Fasano said, "This issue is one that hits close to home for so many Connecticut families.  We now know through research that conventional mammograms don’t catch every tumor. So, for women with dense breast tissue, who are advised to get additional screenings through MRI—this law will require insurance companies to cover the cost."

The new law builds upon recommendations from the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, the American Cancer Society, and the American Society of Clinical Oncology calling for more comprehensive screening options for patients.

Many other states, including New York and California, are discussing bills similar to SB10.

“Connecticut has been on the forefront of early detection and diagnosis of breast cancer," noted Fasano. "This new policy will give women with insurance access to a more complete range of screening options.”

The legislation awaits Governor Malloy's signature.
