Freda: North Haven Receives Construction Industry Award

North Haven First Selectman Michael Freda reports the town has been named one of the eight regional winners of the Harry H. Mellon Award of Excellence award for its sanitation garage project on Elm Street.

The following is a press release from the Office of the North Haven First Selectman.

First Selectman Michael J. Freda announced that the Town of North Haven has joined eight other regional winners as the recipient of the Harry H. Mellon Award of Excellence in Job Order Contracting for 2012.

The Town of North Haven’s Department of Public Works had selected the Pat Munger Construction Company of Branford to design and erect its new sanitation garage located on 110 Elm Street by using the State's Capital Region Council of Governments (CRCOG) EZIQC form of Job Order Contracting in June 2012.

The nine regional winners were chosen by a volunteer panel and competed to be named for the national winner. The Town of North Haven together with the Pat Munger Construction Company are the recipients of the Northeast Region Award, defeating over 1,000 applications from the States of New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Vermont, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maine and New Jersey.

Job Order Contracting was used to fast-track the selection and construction process in order to relocate all Sanitation and Recycling personnel and equipment to the Elm Street location following the termination of the 25 plus year lease on the Grasso Avenue facility.

Along with the construction of the new garage, other improvements at the Public Works Garage were completed, including the repair of a hurricane-destroyed salt storage shed and the installation of a vehicle maintenance exhaust system meeting OSHA regulations. Construction began in June 2012 and was completed by September, 2012. All of the improvements were accomplished within budget and on or ahead of schedule.

“We are honored to have received the Harry H. Mellon Award that emphasizes our dedication to the safe and efficient construction of public buildings and infrastructure,” said First Selectman Freda. “The Town has utilized the EZIQC system on various projects in order to stay within budget and complete the project in a timely manner,” Freda added.
