Linda McMahon Says She Was 'Stunned' by Her Loss

The former head of the WWE gave a post-election interview to Bloomberg News recently and said she was working on her acceptance speech when she learned she'd lost her bid — once again — for a U.S. Senate seat.

Linda McMahon was sitting alone, going over her acceptance speech, when she learned she'd lost, for the second time in as many years, her expensive and hard-fought battle to join the U.S. Senate.

In an interview with Bloomberg News a few days ago, McMahon said she was sitting in an upstairs room of her home, fine-tuning her acceptance speech about 40 minutes after the polls had closed, when she caught sight of a TV graphic showing that Democrat Chris Murphy had won.

"I was stunned for a moment," McMahon told Bloomberg News. "I sat there for a few minutes on my own, reflecting on what the race had been. I thought about the thousands of people who not only had touched me but whom I had touched as well. All the notes, 'Thank you for running. Thank you for showing me that it’s worth putting everything on the line,' and things like that."

She said that while some have criticized her for spending so much of her personal fortune on her Senate aspirations, $97 million as of the latest accounting, comments that she was trying to buy a U.S. Senate seat were off the mark, McMahon told the news service.

"The way it’s framed is that I’m trying to buy the election for my own personal gain. What would be my personal gain? I’m not looking for a new career. I’ve had a wonderful career. I was hoping to bring a different voice and perspective and use my skills that have been honed as a CEO in bringing people together," Bloomberg quotes her.

Luigi, all the misplaced anger and resentment in the world will not change reality. Why can't you let it go and get on with the business of working together?
Chalice November 13, 2012 at 09:23 pm
Luigi, you obviously feel powerless. People who feel powerless need to harass, call names and divert attention from the topic at hand. I feel sorry for you.
Luigi (the original) November 13, 2012 at 09:27 pm
I didn't harass or name call. I just don't really care for or value your opinion.
When you've invested enough of your wisdom, I'll reconsider. The topic at hand is "the morons" in this state that vote for entitlement seekers.
Chalice November 13, 2012 at 09:45 pm
Luigi, you are dishonest. And sadly out of control on every level. You will not win with me. Sadly, your disintegration into a virtual state of incoherence causes me to pity you.
Luigi (the original) November 13, 2012 at 09:50 pm
Pity away kiddo, our conversation is over.
Chalice November 13, 2012 at 09:54 pm
Thank God. Here's hoping you get the help that you so desperately need.

Why is that intelligently worded, thoughtful
comments get erased while the garbage posted above is allowed to remain? Please provide an honest, insightful response.

Rather than argue, and point fingers, and be rude... May I suggest that everyone take a step back and recognize that Linda lost. She lost. That simple.
What's important now (to some of us) is this... stop whining and work together... elected officials. Period.

Silver frame did you notice who your president had in the white house today. Most naturally he had all the union leaders since they will be promised all the goodies. Along with them he also had the lower than low of the USA. All the far left progressive groups who got out the socialist, communist vote and the top was Moveon .org. This is the lowest of all headed and funded by the corrupt George Soros who is now in the catbird seat.
You people out there who voted for this incompetent, class warfare, wreck the USA man who was reelected, you will suffer in the future but what is worse your children and grandchildren will suffer more. You asked for it and you will get it. Don't come crying in the future when you lose your jobs and when you can't afford to live like a human being. The government will support you till this man gets thrown out of the white house and goes back to Chicago with the rest of the thugs and liars. Then you will have to work for a living.
Don Charles November 14, 2012 at 12:15 am
No working together with Obama the man is a dictator and will now try to do whatever he can to wreck the USA. Just pay attention to the executive orders he will put into effect. That will tell you what he has planned. He promised to change America and he is doing that with the help of the fools and freebee lovers who voted him into office.
But_Seriously November 14, 2012 at 03:52 am
I guess crazy increases the amount of internet traffic this place gets. It really is sad to the irrational, unreasonable posters getting preferential treatment on East Patch
Red November 14, 2012 at 04:22 am
I agree Dorreen. Charles, Anthony, Luigi, and the rest of the disgruntled Republicans need to stop saying outrageous, untrue things in an attempt to incite folks. Change the deck!
Red November 14, 2012 at 04:26 am
The voters of Connecticut have spoken. They had a choice between a statesman and a peddler of smut. The statesman won. Now it is time to lay down past resentments and forge ahead.
Luigi (the original) November 14, 2012 at 10:14 am
YES the career politician (who will vote along party lines and who is a union pandering, money spending, card carrying liberal) won over a real Business savvy financially conservative candidates. In both state and federal elections common sense lost to tax and spend socialists.
So I guess now Red and Chalice and Portugal and But_Seriously would like the rest of us to fall in line and shut up...........NOT LIKELY pinko's
Bill Fasula November 14, 2012 at 12:11 pm
Red, you are not going to bring people together with hateful comments.
Robert D. Hoff - Working for a better East Haven November 14, 2012 at 12:57 pm
Mrs Hausler,
I agree with you.
Don Charles November 14, 2012 at 01:14 pm
Statesman, Huh you must be kidding. The man is an imperialist. The country will suffer because the fools in Obama's camp know no better.
Red come back when you are out of work and your family is collecting from Obama's stash. Oh what fools some are.
Luigi (the original) November 14, 2012 at 01:53 pm
Yeah, unfortunately the rest of us are forced to share this space with loons of your ilk.
Alana Joli Abbott November 14, 2012 at 02:18 pm
I agree, Doreen. No sense complaining about what's done -- we have to look to the future and do what we can to solve the problems that are still here. Either with -- or, Don, in spite of -- our elected officials! :)
Thanks for being a voice of civility!

I believe Linda to be a driven hard working and independent (no pun intended) person! I reflect back that the reason I did not vote for her was the information about her bankruptcy, how many people did she leave holding the bag and received pennies on the dollar!! Also I felt like she literally invaded my life the past few months, FB, email, snail mail and then the family dinner hour phone calls! Enjoy life Linda but you ended up repulsing me! Did anyone else feel like that??

Almost all the comments above show why Congress has been in grid-lock for the last few years. The citizens of our country have been sold a bill of goods by the media, on both sides of the aisle, that is so negative. It's basically Madison Ave. selling pure anger and hatrid. Time to raise your sights off the cereal on the bottom shelf ( sugar and fluff ), to the top shelf ( healthy ). Otherwise, it will be your fault this country falls on it's face!

I've heard Ms. McMahon repeat that line about not looking for a new career, not seeing a Senate seat as something for personal gain. Maybe she really believes that but, from this voter's perspective, it was hard not to think that she DID want a new career--specifically, one more prestigious and respectable than co-running WWE. It is a tragedy that she didn't realize that, with $97 million dollars, she could have achieved that without a Senate seat. She could have chosen a key issue (or a group of causes) and invested that money toward making a much greater difference than most Senators ever will. If more of her fortune is looking for a new home, I hope she will consider this alternative.
Jim November 15, 2012 at 07:08 pm
Robin, I have to agree that Ms. McMahon's being a multi-millionaire with enormous personal resources for two campaigns led to an expectation that OF COURSE SHE SHOULD PAY BACK HER CREDITORS> It was shameful not to do so as soon as she was able. You're also right on target about the advertising bombardment ... it was just too, too, too, too much.
Brad Thibodeau November 15, 2012 at 09:23 pm
Chris Murphy ran a nasty campaign as well! I was called by a volunteer for NcMahon and told him if she wanted to serve she should take up residence in a Red state. It is almost impossibe to be elected in CT if you are a Republican. This state used to be prosperous, with plenty of jobs for the middle class. Now we have some of the highest taxes in the land. Major businesses have left or will soon leave, (remember Hartford was once the insurance capital of the world?). Small businesses are shutting down because the tax burden is so high and working people who can afford it are leaving. My wife and I plan to move out after our son leaves for college. CT has an ever growing popuialtion of people on welfare (people move here from NY because the benefits are better) and they are able to buy homes or condos with their Section 8 money, own SUVs, flat screen TVs etc, etc, etc. They live better than some working people. If the Democrats remain in control, CT will continue to get poorer. Fairfied County (where I live) is the only reason CT is not dirt poor now!
Brad Thibodeau November 15, 2012 at 09:34 pm
Red - you think the incompetent failure we have in the White House is a statesman? He snubbed Israeli PM Netantahu twice and now that the Muslims see how he feels about Israel we see a growing conflict between Hamas and Israel with Egypt threatening to get involved. We are headed for a finacial meltdown and the world now is less safe. I have a net friend in Israel and she told me they are scared to death there because Obama got reelected and they know he won't intervene if they are attacked!
sickoftheignorant November 15, 2012 at 11:25 pm
You liberals are just completely brainwashed. You chastise someone for spending their own money on a campaign - I would rather vote for someone that made a personal investment in their future, than someone like Murphy who is upping his income by being a Senator. Linda McMahon, whether I "liked" her or not as a candidate, was willing to spend a good portion of her personal fortune to try to get a job that pays less than $200K a year? Why is that worse than someone like Chris Murphy, who also had his own run of financial problems, now being wealthier than he ever was by being a "public servant." I don't get it. Someone above commented that they didn't like Linda McMahon because of her "bankruptcy" - Chris Murphy wasn't paying his rent, mortgage, etc., but yet you voted him back in? So personal bankruptcy is not OK, yet we can bail out the big auto companies so that Obama and the Democrats can keep the Union votes in their back pocket? By the way geniuses, Linda McMahon spent her OWN money - money that she EARNED. Sorry that you don't like the business that she helped BUILD to EARN that money - oh, WWE is SO MUCH WORSE than HOLLYWOOD right? But as far as the auto bailouts, OBAMA and the DEMS spent OUR MONEY!! You like that better? We'll be paying for those trillions of dollars in "stimulus" for generations. But chastise Linda McMahon for spending her own money. You assholes are just BRILLIANT....
vman November 16, 2012 at 01:11 am
Reality is : people are stupid. Murphy doesn't show up for 75% of his hearings and people vote for him? That's stupid! But not as stupid as a man who is sworn to an office of representing the people and not even doing his job. In the private sector he would have been fired a long time ago; NOT PROMOTED! Shame on the residents of CT.
Kevin November 16, 2012 at 04:50 am
You can always tell a republican in a crowd, they are the ones who are overly loud, obnoxious, and don't know what they are talking about. They are the first to tell you patriotic they are, how anyone who doesn't think and believe what they do is an idiot, a fool or just uninformed. You are the party of the uninformed and McMahon and Romney are examples. Now that he has lost Romney is the stepchild, your party never really liked him, what a bunch of Hippocrites you are
Billie Hub November 20, 2012 at 05:29 pm
Anyone who has the ability to reason, work and accomplish will never be voted in in Connecticut. The Republican party is finished - http://dennismillerradio.com/b/Video:-Miller-in-the-No-Spin-Zone/945239360175900365.html (3 mins In). We are living in very bad times. The vote is given to people who don't have the brains to get out of bed in the morning. You count as much as the drug addict or a dead person. There is something wrong. And Brad..........they are nasty people, they are liars and simply hateful self absorbent demons. We know they will be and its time for us to stop being so polite. But they just won't quit; and one absolutely ruins a soul to fight on their turf. This is the devils world.
Billie Hub November 20, 2012 at 05:32 pm
