School Vs. Prison

Quinnipiac University to screen documentary film about education and juvenile justice in Connecticut April 2.

Quinnipiac University will host a showing of a documentary film examining the relationship between education and the juvenile justice system in Connecticut on Monday, April 2, from 7-9 p.m. in the Clarice L. Buckman Theater on the university’s Mount Carmel Campus.

This event is free and open to the public.

The film, “Education vs. Incarceration: The Real Cost of Failing Our Kids,” is a production of Connecticut Public Television and WNPR. Quinnipiac students Nailah Abdul-Rahman and Gray Tischler are coordinating the campus showing.

“I became interested in juvenile justice issues after taking classes and learning what problems exist,” said Abdul-Rahman, a criminal justice minor. “Growing up in New Haven also has helped me to see a lot of the issues first-hand.”

The students are working with Abby Anderson, executive director of the Connecticut Juvenile Justice Alliance, an advocacy group that addresses juvenile justice issues statewide.

The students are enrolled in courses taught by Alan Bruce, associate professor of sociology at Quinnipiac. Active in juvenile justice causes, Bruce testified before a state Legislature committee in March regarding a bill that addresses police procedure for in-school, student arrest.
