Gateway Showcasing New Solar Energy Lab Today

GCC will offer a tour of the new facilities.

Gateway Community College (GCC) will unveil its new solar energy laboratory at its North Haven campus today at 11:30 a.m.

In addition to a ribbon-cutting ceremony and tour, the opening will feature talks by GCC President Dr. Dorsey L. Kendrick, Bryan Garcia, president of the new Connecticut Clean Energy Finance and Investment Authority, responsible for providing the new lab with a $100,000 grant, and students enrolled in the college's entry-level solar installation course.

Operated by the school's Center for a Sustainable Future (CSF), the new lab will allow students to gain experience installing, maintaining and operating solar energy equipment.

Since 2008, the CSF has provided limited training to around 300 students. With the added hands-on component offered by the new lab, the profile of the program is expected to increase substantially.

According to the college, the added facilities will allow the region to capitalize upon new energy legislation passed by the GA this summer encouraging, among other things, the investment in clean alternatives and green power.

The lab's layout features classroom workspace, an exterior area featuring solar panel arrays, and a mock roof where students can try their hands at installing solar energy systems.
