Kristen Brandt: Democratic Candidate for Board of Education

Democratic candidate for the BOE says cooperation more important than partisanship.

Kristen Brandt, 41, is an attorney and Assistant Adjunct Professor of Legal Studies at Quinnipiac University in Hamden. She has lived in North Haven for 14 years and is a member of the Green Acres School Parent Teacher Association.

“While I did not grow up in North Haven, I have come to love this town and I wanted to get involved in some manner,” Brandt said of her decision to run for a seat on the board.

She said another strong motivating factor was the fact that she has three children of her own enrolled in North Haven schools, ages 14, 11 and six.

“So in addition to being a taxpayer, I have a vested interest in ensuring that North Haven's students receive the highest quality education possible for our tax dollars,” Brandt said.

With public education ever under a microscope and municipal budgets always tight, Brandt said it’s important that all board members work together to resolve challenging issues and keep their collective objective in mind. She said her oldest son helped her crystallize that idea when he asked her why it mattered whether she was running as a Republican or a Democrat; ultimately, she realized, it didn’t.

“I think it’s important that board members work together regardless of party affiliation,” Brandt said. “At the end of the day, I want to do what is best for our students and for our town.”
