North Haven Registers Impressive CAPT Scores

North Haven scored impressively on this year's Connecticut Academic Performance Test (CAPT), beating state averages in each of the exam's four subject areas.

Issued to 10th Graders statewide, the CAPT measures proficiency in mathematics, science, reading and writing. Roughly 40,000 students took the exam this year, with about 270 participating in North Haven.

Students performed well across disciplines, exceling in writing and reading, for which 95% and 90% of students respectively scored at or above proficiency.

Furthermore, in writing, 72% of testees performed at goal, the next performance level above proficiency. 48% of students reached this benchmark in reading.

For both mathematics and science, about 87% of North Havenites performed at or above proficience. 60% scored at goal for science, 49% for math. 

Percentages of advanced scorers, the performance bracket above goal, were not given.

North Haven's results on the CAPT compare favorably to other surrounding towns. While different school districts' scores fluxuated between subjects, in general North Haven performed slightly below Cheshire and Region 5, at parity with North Branford and Branford, and above East Haven, Hamden, and Milford.

Statewide, scores improved in every discipline except reading, where the number of students performing at both proficiency and goal dropped by about 1%.

The largest reported gain occurred in writing, where the number of test-takers scoring at proficiency increased by a little over 2%.
