Quinnipiac School of Medicine Named

Program will be named after famed medical illustrator, Frank H. Netter, M.D.

Quinnipiac University announced late last week that it will be naming its medical school, scheduled to open on the North Haven campus in 2013 or 2014, the Frank H. Netter, M.D., School of Medicine.

Netter, an esteemed surgeon and illustrator known for creating detailed schematics of the human body dating back to the 1930s. His now legendary work, including the ubiquitous Atlas of Human Anatomy, earned him the superlative nickname, "Medicine’s Michelangelo."

“As a medical illustrator, Dr. Netter provided generations of students with scientific and medical information that was simply not available before his works were widely published,” said Dr. Bruce Koeppen, founding dean of the School of Medicine in a press release. “This is certainly a most appropriate and fitting name for our School of Medicine.”

The school is currently engaged in the process of acquiring accreditation for the new medical program from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).

Koeppen noted that he hoped the University would be able to accept its first class next year.
