North Haven Gymnasts Compete at SCC's

Hand Tigers win tournament but Indians are strong on vaults.

North Haven High fielded a contingent of gymnasts at the SCC Championships, held last night at Jonathan Law in Milford. There were strong showings by all four gymnasts, with senior Lisa LeRoux leading the way.

Three freshmen, Melissa DelVasto, Lauren Macolino and Marie Facin rounded out the North Haven squad, which operates as a Team of One, not fielding a complete team, but rather a small group of gymnasts who attend meets with Hamden and Branford. The team is coached by Lisa’s father, Brian LeRoux.

Hand High won the SCC championship last night, but the North Haven gymnasts competed in all four events: the vault, the bars, the beam and the floor. Each of the North Haven gymnasts are “all-arounders,” meaning they compete in all four events.

North Haven’s gymnasts performed best on the vault, with a total team score of 32.65 out of a possible 40. Hand scored a 35.00 on the element. All four gymnasts scored 8 or higher on the vault, with lower scores on the other events.

Coach LeRoux said the team did well. “Next year they’ll be able to compete with full teams. We have the talent and can represent the town."

The three freshmen will be back next year with other gymnasts expected to join, the coach said.
