North Haven Winter Sports Recap

A quick look back at some of North Haven High School's varsity winter sports teams.

As the North Haven High School winter athletics season comes to a close, here is a quick look back at some of the teams and moments that shaped the season.

Starting with basketball...

The boys' team finished 4-16 on the year, falling short of the necessary eight wins needed to qualify for the CIAC Division L state tournament. Two of the Indians' wins came against East Haven, and a Both wins came in January. Coach Peter Civitello's group also managed wins and the Shoreline Conference's Morgan.

Civitello acknowledged the team must look to the future and commented on the late season struggles after

"We've been struggling, we're very young, we've got a lot of players hurt," Civitello said. "It's tough to come back. If we don't get things exactly perfect from the get-go, we could be in for some long times.

"We're hoping that guys grow. We're trying to treat this as our first three or four games of next year because guys like Spencer (Oakes) and Will (Reaves) are only juniors and sophomores, so we're hoping they improve."

The girls' team finished the winter campaign slightly better at 5-15. The Indians kept with the common theme of beating East Haven, and a North Haven also marked wins against Platt Tech and Hyde Leadership as well as The Indians split their meetings with the Hornets,

 On to boys' ice hockey, where the season ended in a photo finish fashion.

Coach Mike Violano's squad narrowly missed the CIAC Division I state tournament with a record of 7-13, missing the eight games or .400 winning percentage required for eligibility.

The team started the season strong, Despite opening the season with two wins, the Indians lost their next six games. North Haven rebounded, showing potential with quality victories over Daniel Hand and Cheshire. Inconsistency showed its face as the Indians lost five of their next seven games. put North Haven on the brink of qualification, but their last two trips to foreign ice resulted in losses.

  fared well in , the boys finished 15th in the state while the girls' team finished 9th. Danielle Scarano finished 6th in the girls' 55-meter hurdles and Martina Benassi finished 3rd in the pole vault. Katherine Lewis took 3rd place for a strong shot put with solid efforts by Kelsey Searles, Sabrina Coppola and Kathryn Ionta.

For the boys' team Kevin Bucknall took home 6th in the 600-meter run, Colby Jennings came in 8th in the 1000-meter. John Spencer finished 5th in the 55-meter hurdles. Matthew Marcarelli finished 5th in the shot put.
