North Haven High School raises over $6000 for Terri Brodeur Breast Cancer Foundation....$24,000 since 2008

On Thursday evening, November 14, the North Haven High School Girls’ Sports Awards Night was held at Fantasia Banquet Facility. The sports teams for Cross Country, Field Hockey, Soccer, Swimming and Volleyball were presented with their awards and the team captains made short speeches sharing their feelings about their team mates and family support. The last team to the podium was the Volleyball squad, and one of the team captains Kyle Searles made an announcement about the charitable donations they were able to raise over the past few years. “We worked hard to raise funds for our charity, the Terri Brodeur Breast Cancer Foundation, raising over $6,000 this year, and over $24,000 since my older sister Kelsey organized the initial 2008 Pink Game.”

$24,000 is an amazing amount, and the TBBCF grants 100% of gross funds raised, making this total amount pay for six months of breast cancer research! “The total we raise keeps going up every year and I hope it continues,” shares Kyle, who is a senior this year. She and her family have put a lot of energy and dedication into raising money for breast cancer research. They are largely responsible for the large push for donations, but are joined by the fans and the community. The Denny’s Challenge is a part of the fundraising activities, where Natania Zureiqi, another senior on the volleyball squad, whose father Sam owns three Denny’s restaurants in CT and donates $50 for each game North Haven during the season. This year the check was for $900, “We wish it was more, but have high hopes for next year,” shares Sam, who plans to continue his dedication to the cause.

Every year since 2008, NHHS holds “Pink Week” during the month of October for breast cancer awareness, and the Indian girls sell t-shirts with sponsor logos on the back (39 this year), culminating in their “Pink Game” at the end of that week. Their fundraising activities were joined by the North Haven Youth Football who also held a “Pink Game” where the 8th grade youth boys wore pink socks during their game while their cheerleaders wore pink t-shirts.

The search for a cure for breast cancer continues. The chance of a woman having invasive breast cancer some time during her life is about 1 in 8.  Each year, there are over 200,000 new diagnoses in women and over 2,000 in men. Numerous organizations have been founded to raise money for breast cancer research and awareness.  TBBCF devotes 100% of gross fundraising dollars directly to research. Those who donate will know exactly how and to whom their donation dollars are directed. TBBCF has raised over $2.4 million for breast cancer research since its inception, with 100% going to research grants.
