North Haven's Civil War Connection on Display this Summer

North Haven's Historical Society's Civil War exhibit has a must-see collection of hometown authentic Civil War memorabilia, history and artifacts on display this summer.

Following President Abraham Lincoln’s Proclamation on April 15, 1861 to convene Congress and seek volunteers, North Haven soon found itself caught up in what would become the Civil War.

After services at the Congregational Church on Sunday, April 21, 1861, North Haven residents saw the following, as quoted by town historian Sheldon Thorpe in his “North Haven Annals”:

“ … two immense trains thundered through the town carrying the Boston Light Artillery on open cars to the defense of Washington.”

North Haven’s contribution to the War was not insignificant. There were a total of 85 men who enlisted in the appeal, six of whom were officers. North Haven family names included Goodyear and Stiles. While some men were lucky enough to return home to their families and make contributions to the town, there were others who were not as fortunate.

The Historical Society has the North Haven connection to the Civil War on exhibit this summer, featuring authentic Civil War memorabilia, including photos and artifacts. The collection is open on Thursdays from 3pm- 6pm through the summer.
