QU Plans Graduate Information Sessions

The wide variety of options for graduate degrees at Quinnipiac University will be explained next month.

  Quinnipiac University will host three information sessions for prospective graduate students in June and July 2012.  The first session, scheduled for Tuesday, June 26, at 4:30 p.m. on Quinnipiac’s North Haven Campus, 370 Bassett Road, is for prospective graduate students interested in the physician assistant program. The session will begin with a presentation by graduate admissions and financial aid staff, followed by a breakout session with the program director and current students. Tours of the North Haven Campus will follow. The second session, scheduled for Tuesday, June 26, at 6 p.m. on Quinnipiac’s North Haven Campus, 370 Bassett Road, is for prospective graduate students interested in programs from the School of Education, School …

DMV Launches Appointment System for Learner's Permit Test

Test center will open in Cheshire on May 30.

The old system went like this: Parents brought their teenager to a DMV office and waited in a long line to register for the learner's permit test. They waited again for the teenager to take the test, and again, if the teenager passed, for the permit to be issued. The process could take anywhere from an hour or two to half the day. The new system will go like this: Parents or teens can still walk in to a nearby DMV (see above), or they can go online to make an appointment for the learner's permit test, then travel to a new test center in Cheshire to take the test on a specific day and at a specific time.  The DMV announced the new system this week, though the test center in Cheshire — off Exit 3 on Route 691 — does not open until May 30. Local Shotgun Manufacturer Joins Armed Citizen Alliance

The new organization aims to help citizens train to be effective gun owners.

O.F. Mossberg & Sons, Inc., the North Haven gun maker that earlier this year participated in a business forum for local manufacturers, has announced it will support an initiative to help ordinary citizens to arm themselves more effectively with firearms. The shooting sports news online publication AmmoLand.com reported that Mossberg would support the Armed Citizen Alliance, which aims to help concealed-carry and personal defense firearms users to be better trained and prepared. Mossberg, founded in 1919, is the oldest family-owned firearms manufacturer in the United States and the largest maker of pump-action shotguns in the world.

Voters' Guide for North Haven Budget Referendum

When and where to vote - and some details on what you're voting for.

Polls open for the annual North Haven budget referendum on Tuesday, May 22 from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Voters decide whether to pass the budget or send it back to the drawing board. The question on the ballot is as follows: “Shall the town of North haven, in accordance with the recommendation of the Board of Finance approve and adopt a budget consisting of $45,720,684 for the Board of Education and $39,330,314 for the Town Government for a total amount of $85,050,998 for the fiscal year July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013?” First Selectman Michael Freda supports the budget, which represents a 1.1 percent increase from the current fiscal year. There’s no tax rate increase in the budget. The school portion of the budget includes some restructuring. …

North Haven’s Unemployment Rate Shows Decline in April

The New Haven labor market gained jobs, although the state as a whole did worse.

Although the state lost jobs overall, North Haven’s unemployment rate declined from March to April, according to the state Labor Department. The New Haven Register said the New Haven labor market gained 3,300 jobs in April and saw unemployment decline, although statewide Connecticut lost 4,100 jobs. State Department of Labor statistics showed that North Haven’s unemployment rate dipped from 7.2 percent to 6.8 percent from March to April.
