After a long battle with cancer, WTNH's Dr. Mel has passed.
Today, WTNH reported that their longtime Meteorologist Dr. Mel Goldstein passed away at 66 years old. WTNH reports that Dr. Mel, "had been fighting Multiple myeloma for a number of years." Dr. Mel, who has been with WTNH since 1986retired from the station in October, 2011. Prior to retiring, Dr. Mel had been working from his home weather station and reported aboutIrene from his porch just hours before his home was badly damaged. WTNH reports that VP and General Manager Mark Higgins said in an e-mail to station staff, "We not only lost a great journalist today, but a great humanitarian and close friend." Meriden's Zoning Board of Appeals approved a number of different requests at a special meeting last week, including allowing a tattoo parlor to make a cross-town move, a Bradley Park area church to turn a nearby house into a rectory, and Metro PCS to build cell antennas on a Johnson Ave. water tower. The owners of Plan 9 Tattoo's plans to move from their current location at 351 W. Main St., in Meriden to 930 Old Colony Road were OK'd by the board at Thursday's meeting. The business needed special dispensation as a recent city ordinance prohibits new tattoo parlors, pawn brokers and piercing establishments from opening up in Meriden – but members deemed a move by an existing tattoo parlor as compliant with the ordinance. Michael Mele Michael Mele, 105, of Hamden passed away Saturday, October 8, 2011. He was the husband for 38 years of the late Carmel Ghirardini Mele and the father of Michael R. Mele of North Haven, and Robert L. Mele of New Haven. Born in New Haven in 1906, son of the late Alfonso Mele and Rosalina Proto Mele, he leaves a sister, Fay Barile, of New Haven and was predeceased by sisters Carmel Mele, Anna Rinaldi, and brothers Gabriel, John, and Anthony Mele and Leo De Paul.
