Board to meet tonight at 7 p.m. in the library.
The North Haven Board of Selectmen will convene tonight at 7 p.m. in the library's Community Room. According to the agenda, downloadable as a PDF here, no resolutions will be voted on, but the Board will hear a presentation from the Citizen's Advisory Panel (CAP), a group responsible for dispensing information to the public regarding the Upjohn cleanup effort begun in April. In addition to the talk by CAP, the Board will also address a letter from resident Raymond Fowler regarding child abuse. At the April Board of Selectmen meeting, Fowler suggested that First Selectman Freda consider instituting a "Prevent Child Abuse" week or month in North Haven. Such a program may be unveiled at tonight's meeting. For a more detailed breakdown of …

Fathers of two boys suspended from Middle School speak up at Board of Ed meeting.
A bottle of Lipton Brisk iced tea is at the center of a controversy that led to the suspension of four boys from the North Haven Middle School last week. Two of the boys’ fathers appeared at the Board of Education meeting last night to protest the way the school system had handled the incident, in which the boys were suspended for violating the school’s alcohol policy after a parent complained that liquor had been consumed before their baseball team’s practice last Wednesday. Richard Rife, the father of one of the boys who was suspended, said it is common for team members to share energy drinks before practices, but that it remains unclear why the iced tea was believed to be alcohol. Tom DeRosa, the father of the boy who had the iced tea …

Governor's proposal to eliminate sealed tickets is strongly opposed.
Republican State Representative David Yaccarino's held his monthly office hours session last night at the West Ridge Firehouse for citizens to come express viewpoints on state government and ask questions of the legislator. The meeting was sparsely attended, with most of the cookies, cheese, and crackers going uneaten. There was, however, plenty of virtiol directed at Governor Dan Malloy's budget, which Yaccarino opposes, but fears will pass. Norman Kamienski, a Hamden resident and Elks member, said the proposed budget would eliminate the sealed tickets program his and other service organizations utilize to raise money for charities. The Elks Club, American Legion, and other non-profits buy sealed tickets from the state and sell them in …

North Haven Trail Association group enters the new year with optimism, enthusiasm, and a sense of purpose.
The North Haven Trail Association (NHTA) held their first meeting of the year last night at North Haven’s Linsley Street Recreation Center. Speaking to a packed house, NHTA President Ron Penton was enthusiastic about the turnout, which included the full board, numerous members, and a few new faces as well. “It’s nice to see such a good group here,” Penton said. North Haven residents Tim Crosby, his daughter, and David Roby were a few of the new attendees at the meeting. Both men are avid outdoorsmen. Crosby hikes and has canoed the Quinnipiac for years, teaching his children the same. Both Roby and Crosby expressed their appreciation for the area’s natural beauty, and Crosby said of the NHTA’s trail along the river, “It’s a beautiful place…

Group looking to support new project and amend bylaws.
After confirming its healthy financial situation at the beginning of its monthly meeting last night, the North Haven High School PTSA determined that some of the money should go towards a new project. Mothers Against Drunk Driving was suggested, but that was quickly dismissed as being overdone. The issue will be reconvened at the next meeting. Last night's meeting, attended by eight PTSA members, but not school principal Russ Dallai, addressed two new business issues—updating the organization's bylaws and issuing a report on the organization's scholarship program, which provides money to graduating seniors for college and trade schools. Much of the meeting was devoted to supporting upcoming school activities that range from Friday's …

The father of the boy is correct and he along with his son have become victimized by the schools inability to use common sense and good judgement. Parents should realize that the "Zero Tolerance" policy or what I like to call the Zero Common Sense policy is just a tool imbedded into the schools policies across the nation to deter any responsibility or common sense away from school staff members. …   more ›
